Each edition of our I RUN THIS Series features women entrepreneurs and small business owners doing what they love, and excelling at it. We hope to not only spread the word about what these amazing women do, but to inspire you to take the leap and follow your own bliss!
This month's feature is on Daniela, owner and designer of Friday Apparel, a bold line of graphic tees and sweaters that lets your clothes do the talking.
I am both a customer and admirer of Friday Apparel, and am so lucky to have such a lovely friend in Daniela. I own several of her tees and sweaters, and can personally vouch that they are soft, comfortable, and super cute to boot! Her charismatic designs range from cheeky to inspirational, including my favorite, the Love Yourself Tee. Below is a short interview with Daniela, and a link to where you can get your own Friday Apparel!
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself and how your business got its start.
I am a wife and mother of 2 amazing kids, with a baby boy on the way. I've always loved fashion. When I was a little girl, I'd go to the mall and stay at a department store for an hour, trying on EVERYTHING in my size. I love buying fashion magazines and seeing the inspired combos the women are wearing. I watch TV and notice outfits, styles, patterns, designs - I just love everything about fashion! When Instagram became popular, I thought it would be fun to be a fashion blogger, but I don't love being in front of the camera. Starting my own clothing line allows me to be a fashion blogger -- but behind the camera! I love getting to create a brand I believe in and put my whole heart into, plus curate a feed of fabulous & fun photos.
2. Where do you find inspiration for your designs?
I am a Pinterest-aholic! I love pinning. Quotes, far away beaches, outfits, all of it. I get a lot of my inspiration from what I see there. I also love fashion magazines and Instagram -- more places to see what's trending, what people love and what's coming up hot.
3. How do you balance work and family time?
I used to mesh family time WITH work time -- and that is a BAD idea. If you decide to be a mom AND run a business -- designate separate time for both! This was key for me. Make separate time to work and give your work 100%. Then, when you're with your family, give your family 100%. I'm much happier when I work this way!
4. What is the best business advice you've ever received?
I absolutely love Becki from Whippy Cake. She's been someone I look up to big time in the fashion world. The best advice I've heard came from her. She said to write down your ideas as soon as you have them. Whether it's a quick note in your phone or you carry around a notebook - write it down. Our brains aren't made to carry 100 thoughts around and have us remember them all the time. There's no room for creativity in there! Getting your thoughts down in a notebook clears up room in your mind for creativity. This advice has been huge for me.
5. And lastly, what do you like to do for fun?
Fun? Free time? What are those?! Ha ha. I absolutely live for date nights with my husband. Saturday night is OUR time. We go to dinner and just talk and talk and talk. Besides Friday, of course, it's the best day of my week.
Thank you, Daniela! Your shop and beautiful Instagram feed constantly inspire me, and I'm so grateful for your friendship, advice and insight.
Love these flat-lays featuring Friday Apparel and our Pom Beanies!
