Education Empowers

February 09, 2016

To me, education is everything. It is empowerment. It is opportunity. It is the key to success. And, it is, unfortunately, a privilege not afforded to everyone.

I was extremely lucky in many ways. I grew up in a loving home where higher education was encouraged, and learning was fun. I went to a high school that focused on academics and offered a full curriculum of Advanced Placement classes. And, most importantly to my college success, I was awarded a full academic scholarship to an amazing university. That scholarship changed my life. It dictated which school I chose to attend, allowed me to focus on my studies instead of worrying about how I was going to pay for tuition, and even brought me to my forever friends and the love of my life. Like I said, I've been so blessed! And now, I want to give back.

I hate to think of how many women are barred from higher education not because of a lack of motivation, but because of prohibitive costs. I have realized that it is within my power to help change that sad reality. Starting retroactively from January 1, 2016, a percentage of all of our proceeds will be going straight toward scholarships for women in increments of $500. Taking all costs into account, I know it's not much ... perhaps enough for a semester or two of books. But maybe it will be one less thing for a new college student to worry about as she moves into the dorms, or a reminder to a single mom taking night classes that someone out there wants her to succeed. Maybe it's enough to make a difference for someone. And that's more than enough for me.
